project 02

house sycamore

An existing weatherboard cottage, landlocked to the rear of a small site in the leafy suburb of Malvern. The quaint building was designed by notable Architect Peter McIntyre in a typical vernacular to his chalet style cottages to the Dinner Plain Alpine Village.

Following a site appraisal, the conditions were found to be typical for many inner city dwellings with much renovation required to the building structure and site landscaping, as well as provide suitable efficient use of space for a young family.

The existing conditions included a small 2 bedroom dwelling with mezzanine floor, exposed beams, stone fireplace and limited zoning between spaces. It may have been well suited for two or as a weekender, but for an expectant young couple some attention was required.

The brief being to provide an organic flow between spaces whilst also maintaining clear zones.  An additional bedroom for the little one; an extended parents mezzanine retreat with added ensuite and an outdoor screened balcony and suitable living space with a library/study area.

The dramatic cathedral ceiling with original exposed structure accentuates the generous living, dining, kitchen space which then extends seamlessly to a broad timber deck and private outdoor courtyard garden.

In our view it is possible with considered design to achieve a positive sense of space, light and comfort with the most limiting of context.  We believe that this is a testimony and a key to truly sustainable design principles.
